4.000.000 UK Small Businesses damaged and inconvenienced

by Stefan Töpfer on Oct 04, 2007

In an unbelievable display of ” We could not care less about our customers“, the Royal Mail workers are on strike, for five (5) days. Small business is set to suffer the most, and will have to foot a hefty bill for this madness.

As usual in these cases, one side blames the other – the truth is both sides are to blame as usual. I can only urge all small businesses, like SOHO-, SME, SMB-, Micro-, Lifestyle-, Home-, DIY-, Hobby-, Boomer- or Personal businesses, like professional, contractors, freelancer, self-employed, sole-trader and virtual assistants, to find a new service provider for their mail and parcel services.

We seem to be getting back to the bad old days in the 21st.-century United Kingdom. Some say this is typical of a Labour Party run country, some say it is a sign of failing and outdated infrastructure concepts. At this point I must say I don’t really care why it is happening, the fact that it is happening is completely outrageous. One thing is for sure the government is most certainly – as a shareholder of the Royal Mail – in part to blame for this mess. Lets hope Mr. Brown will call an election soon, so he can pay the price for his part in the dismantling of a great British institution.

Not so long ago we had an equal display of incompetence, selfishness and outright disregard for the public’s needs, when the London Underground went on strike.

If it carries on like this, then we will not have to worry about any possible recession, since we all be shut for business anyway. ST.

Is the old fashioned method or methods of advertising, still worth their salt. Namely Leafleting, radio, word of mouth. With the internet now firmly in place and not looking like it is going anywhere soon, a lot of the old practices seem almost antiquated. I guess they still have their place. It’ll be interesting to see how the whole thing levels out in a decade from now.

My drum teacher was a postman, and he used to say that when strikes were called at Royal Mail, even if you didn’t agree with them, you didn’t go to work. Otherwise you might find your car tyres slashed. So it may well be that not everyone at Royal Mail agrees with the strikes.

That aside, whoever’s organising the latest series of Royal Mail strikes is in severe danger of shooting themselves in the foot. Because I can see small businesses, and other users of the post, getting so fed up with these frequent strikes that, as Stefan says, they switch to a new service provider, which may well be online.

And then, as the demand for their services reduces, there will be redundancies at Royal Mail.

So the strike will bring them exactly what they’re fighting against.

I agree, I rely on the post office quite heavily and whenever there is a strike, my clients who require leaflet distribution from me have to go elsewhere. Couries maybe happy though.

  5. leaflet distribution service

For us its quite the opposite, during a postal strike we get alot of leaflet distribution work coming through the doors. can’t say I mind actually.
