Q&A: Free or Paid For Webhosting?

I think it is clear that all businesses today - big or small - need a website, which has to be hosted. You will find some options here, you can go for the free hosted website or you can can go to a web-hosting company and pay for the service.

Nothing in live is free - so the “free” hosted website will be advertising financed. Maybe you do not care that your website is full of ads for other and sometimes competitive services, than you could consider this option.

If however you want the visitor to read and concentrate on your products and services you need a website without distractions, i.e. advertising. A website is like a billboard, you have 20 - 30 seconds to get someone interested in your services, if they get distracted by ads for 20 seconds, you’re left with 10 max. - I guess you can do the math yourself. There are many web-hosting companies out there who give you good value for money, or you could use WinWeb’s - All you need to run your business! offer.

In my opinion free web-hosting on the above basis is no option for a serious small business owner. ST.

It think if you’re after business from your site then you need to pay so that you can make how you want it. If you’ve got an address like www.mybusiness.freewebhosting.com then people are’nt likely to remember the address that easily. It’s also going to be harder to find on a search engine. For what it costs to host you might as well pay.

I would extend this to making sure, at the very least, that business owners have their “own” e-mail address i.e stuart@3ca.co.uk as opposed to stuart.jones57@hotmail.com

Cheap web hosting is a false economy.

Generally speaking if the webspace is very cheap then the support will be poor and you will be crammed on a server with hundreds of other companies. This will mean that there is a higher likelyhood of downtime due to software glitches/clashes, which increase the more users you have on a machine, and high bandwidth use. The server may also run more slowly.

In fact we pay £1000 a year for a managed server as if it goes down for just one day it can cost more than a £1000. 1 day downtime or 24 days of 1 hour at a time equates to 99.5% uptime….

Then again our service needs high reliability
