Top 5 Website Design Tips

by Stefan Töpfer on Nov 16, 2009

!cid_CF682DD0-D4EF-4328-A711-50E49F677CDC The top 5 tips weekly post is always full of hints and tips for small, home & micro business owners.

  • Keep things as simple as possible for the people visiting your website. Make sure they leave with the information they need.
  • Work with your best customers to create a testimonial page that will sing the praises of your company.
  • A simple font on a light background always works best because it is easily readable.
  • Use sub-headings to break up large blocks of information. Pages should be easily skimmed.
  • Check your website for broken links after every update.

Another tip we found useful on our website is to break text into small paragraphs, use headings to break up the text and bullet points for easier readability. Readers tend to scan text on a website so you need to make it as easy for them as possible.

The tips all sound so commonsensical, but then you remember that common sense isn’t all that common. One of my beefs is with bloggers who insist upon using a black background; it’s not so much that I find it hard to read, usually, but that it’s just hard on the eyes. It may not be as bad as using, say, a red background, but it can be overbearing all the same. And don’t get me started on those sites that make you play hide-and-seek when you try to obtain information.

also try to make it easy for customers to find your products. if a big site, include a search box.
And keep the number of clicks to target (eg. clicks to sale) to a minimum. Ideally about 3-5 clicks to purchase.

Make web headings clear and consise. Leave witty or quirky headings to newspapers where readers have more time and you can be more indulgent.

@ Nannetta, I totally agree, black backgrounds just seem to hard on the eye’s for me, I did however find that they work great for adsense.

My Tip: Create a good linking structure so visitors can easily find other related pages on your website.

I would love to hear from you, please let me know what your take on my blog post is. In order to stop spam on my blog and increase conversations, I had to implement some simple rules:

1. Please enter your real name, not your company, product or service's name.
2. If you enter your URL, your name will become a link to the URL.
3. We may send you a confirmation email to check you are a real person

We are sorry but any violation of the above rules will mean an automatic removal of your comment.
