Barriers to growth

by Jason Holden on Sep 11, 2006

Martin Rushton made a comment on an earlier blog that if you are going to run a small business here in the UK then ‘Don’t employ anybody else’.

It may seem like Martin was having a bad day, but he has a very valid point concerning the ‘red tape‘ and ‘regulation’ that comes with the responsibility of employing someone else, in fact according to a recent survey conducted by the Small Business Research Trust which looked into the main barriers to growth, during its research employment regulations came only second to that of taxation (including national insurance) as a barrier to growth.

As you can see employing staff is not easy, but remember like with everything take professional advice at the outset, fix a fee for the work to be done and get set out the terms of employment properly so all know their rights and entitlements, this may save you a lot of hassle later.
