Starting next week my posts for the coming months are designed to give some bite sized help and advice to the start-up. A lot of what I do surrounds guidance for the smaller business and this is why I have decided that over the coming months I am going to produce an online guide to assist the start-up.
This guide will also consist of useful links to other websites which have useful material that will assist any start-up.
If there is an area not covered that you feel is worth a mention, please post a comment and I will look into it, otherwise the guides will be split to give advice in the following areas:
- What you should do before you start
- Selecting professional advisers to partner you
- What legal entity is right for your business
- Cash planning and forecasting
- Registering with the various government departments
- Funding your business
- Bookkeeping requirements
- Dealing with Value Added Tax
- Dealing with Payroll
- Dealing with business taxation
- What next ………
Before we commence I would like to deal with the Legal Disclaimer:

I would love to hear from you, please let me know what your take on my blog post is. In order to stop spam on my blog and increase conversations, I had to implement some simple rules:
1. Please enter your real name, not your company, product or service's name.
2. If you enter your URL, your name will become a link to the URL.
3. We may send you a confirmation email to check you are a real person
We are sorry but any violation of the above rules will mean an automatic removal of your comment.

As a suggestion, there’s a couple of other things that I’d add:
– Hiring your first employee
– Increasing your business through marketing, telemarketing and/or advertising.
Both of these are pertinent to people and, especially the first, is a very vague area. Its been something that I’ve been considering writing myself. My blog is currently focused on the second.
Good luck and I look forward to reading your information.

I will make hiring your first employee the very first posting under point 11; I have to be honest here I have cheated, point 11 is to catch all other suggestions so please keep them coming and thank you for that Philippe that is a very important first post for me to do under ‘What next…’.

[...] Take The Small Business Blog for example, some of the posting are an online diary, like this one which was spurred on by a conversation I had, but other postings are intended to be more informative like the Start Up Guides, but unlike a static brochure type website this medium gives everyone the opportunity to interact, post comments and ask questions. [...] There is not enough time or space for me to cover all the tax implications and ramifications of a new or existing business in this our tenth bite-sized Start Up Guide. I will however cover a few of the basics to help you get a better understanding of this vast and complex area, so the next time your accountant sits opposite you talking about ‘tax’ you have an idea what it is he is saying. - Writing your business plan
- The top basic business courses you are advised to make time for (and where you can find gov supported programs)
- Making the decision to work at home or in an outside office
(the rest)
- Dealing with contracts

I’ve been out of college almost a year, and enjoy freelancing. I have a passion to design for non-profits, and other clients, but don’t know what to bring to the table to get their attention. HELP!

The site also features a very popular forum where businesses, aspiring entrepreneurs, loyal readers and casual visitors share their ideas on how to start a business. This is very useful for me.
