The Future Of Web Startups

by Stefan Töpfer on Oct 22, 2007

There is a great article by Paul Graham on “The Future of Web Startups“, it is so close to what I believe in, example:

“… So my first prediction about the future of web startups is pretty straightforward: there will be a lot of them. When starting a startup was expensive, you had to get the permission of investors to do it. Now the only threshold is courage.”

or

” … It might seem that if startups get cheap to start, it will mean the end of startup hubs like Silicon Valley. If all you need to start a startup is rent money, you should be able to do it anywhere.”

The truth is you don’t even need the rent money, just do it in your garage or kitchen. Using online technology, means you can do it anywhere at anytime, build your small business network, do business on the beach, while on holiday – it’s all possible.

The important thing here to realize is, that many people are thinking about starting up a small business and start-up business, like SOHO-, SME, SMB-, Micro-, Lifestyle-, Home-, DIY-, Hobby-, Boomer- or Personal business, like professional, contractors, freelancer, self-employed, sole-trader and virtual assistants.

It’s getting cheaper, it’s getting easier and it’s getting more and more important for each global economy. ST.

A virtual assistant practice can be started with everything you already have – PC, high speed internet, telephone and the ability to manage yourself. You can see what it’s all about at www.yourvirtualresource.com – click on become a VA.

If you have HR or Interview experience, you might want to take a look at www.interviewcoachingbusiness.com – it costs a little more to get started, but the rewards will be terrific. Support from The Interview Coach, Carole Martin is terrific. It’s a business where you can help people.

There are lots of opportunities, but these are the ones I know work. But you have to keep the faith that you can do it.

Think it cost me about £30 for hosting and site name. Most of the software you need can be found as open source. Even Microsoft give Visual Web Developer away for free. Gimp will do any Photoshop type stuff. OpenOffice gives you a word processor, spreadsheet program, database and powerpoint equivalent. Google anayltics tells you what your site traffic is like without charge. And most of useful info you need as a startup can be found from blogs like this one or a small business forum. Got to be the cheapest time in history to set up on your own and the internet does make the world your oyster.

Now really is the time with technology being so cheap to start that small, technology coupled with the infrastructure winweb can provide why wouldn’t you give it a go?

Very easy to set up a business technically, but the easier it is, the more startups there will be, meaning the more difficult it will be to make them a success.

I’ve been through it – my web development company is about four years in. Very hard work, and a lot of lessons learnt on the way.

You’re right though – it does need a bit of courage!
