Small Business Conversation And Collaboration

by Stefan Töpfer on Jul 07, 2010

Business collaboration

As a great believer in the power of small business I can’t stress enough the importance of engagement, conversation and collaboration in the small business world; as the old saying goes “two heads are better than one” and even more than that is a bonus!

Big businesses have many employees, often a board of directors and shareholders who they can take advice, direction and input from. In a small business, however, this is not necessarily the case and this can often be to the detriment of the business. Collaboration is vital to moving forward, and that is why I believe it is vital for small businesses to talk to each other.

Over the next few weeks I will be introducing some exciting new projects I am working on to enable small businesses to collaborate, take advice and talk to each other. I encourage you and your business to get on board and become involved in each of these projects, helping you business to grow and thrive.

Success for small businesses must come from working together – rather than working as individual entities small businesses must collaborate. When working as a freelancer, home business or small business it can be hard to generate this level of collaboration and conversation; especially when your business takes up a lot of time leaving little time to network.

When working day in day out on a small business it can often be hard to see different ways to take your business forward. Speaking to other business owners, or reading blogs detailing the experiences of successful business people, can be a great way to further your business and increase the productivity of your small business.

I will be speaking here over the coming weeks about ways that your small business can engage in conversation and collaboration both with other small business owners as well as successful business people. I really hope you’ll join me!

I’ve been going to local business networking meetings for years now and it has definately been worth my time. I’m always suprised by the places I get business from when I network.

I would definitely agree to it. There was various reasons for it. I have been working on my site for quite sometime now. I have really put in some hard work but I have reached a point where I dont feel like taking my business forward. Either I want to start something else or delegate this work to someone. I believe that it is because I am the only one in my startup and there are no subordinates to discuss the issues and to be more creative.

    Hi Stefan,
Think you are absolutely right and look forward to hearing about your new projects and getting involved in the conversation and collaboration.

Collaborating or building a network is like building a (virtual) team, when it works you can achieve so much more.

For small businesses communication and collaboration are everything. And without the burden of red tape it is much easier for small businesses to be in touch with their customers and communicating more effectively internally. More and more small businesses are embracing social media and social mobile phone apps to communicate more effectively, boosting innovation and agility. And the same technologies, perhaps more importantly, close the gap between business and customer. Businesses can now engage with their customers socially. At present big business hasn’t quite got this right. But SME businesses are perfectly positioned to benefit from more effective customer communication.

Excellent! I’m glad you’ll be speaking on these topics and giving examples. I always think that collaboration and conversation go hand-in-hand, and it is a challenge to keep that conversation up in a small business of only a handful of employees, or for those who work virtually. Even the tips you shared here already about networking with other professionals and reading blogs is great. I look forward to more!

Starting a small business can be less stressful if you work with good resources and connect with your stakeholders. I’ve found that many of the businesses that I’ve worked with that grew quickly and successfully, did so by developing their own small business community or network. They use these communities to talk about how to build strategies; and leverage challenges and opportunities; and how to handle weaknesses and threats.

Hi Stefan. I’d almost say that voicing ideas you have about your business is essential to it’s success. I’ve been a one man band for a while and while you have loads of ideas in your head, until you get them “out” either on paper or even better to bounce off of someone else, they get jumbled, confused and usually not used. If I were going into business again now, I’d look for a partner for us to bounce ideas off of. It’s vital to productivity and direction.

I think you’re correct. The smaller the business the more important is it so seek out others to bounce ideas off of and check your sanity…
