Australia/New Zealand Small Business News Round-up – 15/10/2008

by Stefan Töpfer on Oct 15, 2008

Here is this week’s news round-up for home business, micro business, sole-traders, freelancers, self-employed and any one who is interested in small business news from Australia and New Zealand:

  • Taxes mock small business innovation: THE Rudd Government has pinned its colours to the mast of innovation, leading the way on emissions trading, and last week showed support for a Productivity Commission recommendation for paid maternity leave.
  • Don’t hold your breath: One small business isn’t banking on a quick recovery despite yesterday’s rates cut.
  • Start-up ventures can gain from uni: Bright ideas will be turned into successful commercial ventures through WaikatoLink’s Venture Incubator, which was opened to local entrepreneurs last week. WaikatoLink, the commercial arm of the University of Waikato, has helped…
  • Office bully or workplace victim?: Snakes in suits’ and ‘the office psychopath’ are labels attached to the workplace bully – yet often the real issues are about unresolved conflict between two people, says an academic and workplace mediator.
  • OnlineOffice 5 goes live: Today WinWeb released the long awaited new release of it’s leading Small Business Infrastructure – OnlineOffice 5.
  • Small business backed in IR brawl: THE Rudd Government has backed small business over unions by moving to kill off a compulsory redundancy proposal that it warned could cost employers and taxpayers up to $100 million a year.
  • RBA rate reduction praised by small business: As the stock market turmoil drags on, the Reserve Bank’s interest rate reduction has drawn praise from small business leaders.
  • Small business insomnia: Running a small business can be stressful. It can lead to sleepless nights and even a constant state of panic. That’s not healthy. But if it happens too often, you might get used it and think it’s normal. While running on adrenalin can give you an edge, if you keep at that pace for too long, you’re eventually going to collapse.
  • New centre to offer support for small business: The Federal Government is hoping a new manufacturing centre, opening in Dandenong today, will help thousands of companies deal with the global economic crisis.

As always this list is not exhaustive, but I hope it will give you a little overview. — ST.
