Canada Small Business News Round-up – 01/04/2008

by Stefan Töpfer on Apr 01, 2008

Here is this week’s news round-up for home business, micro business, sole-traders, freelancers, self-employed and any one who is interested in small business news from Canada:

  • Newfoundland and Labrador small business confidence highest in Canada: St. John’s – Results of CFIB’s latest Quarterly Business Barometer (QBB) reveal that small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Newfoundland and Labrador are the most optimistic in Canada. This marks the fourth consecutive climb in business confidence and the second quarter in a row that the province’s confidence level tops the Canadian average.
  • Quarterly Business Barometer Small business outlook holds firm – CFIB: Toronto – Small businesses are maintaining a cautious outlook in light of uncertainty in financial markets, energy markets and concerns about the faltering US economy, the latest survey of business optimism by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business shows. Latest expectations push the Business Barometer index down only slightly from the previous quarter, but still well below past norms.
  • Small, yet vital: The number of small businesses — and the number of people they employ — has mostly been on the upswing since the turn of the century, with the exception of 2001. A small business has between 1 and 50 employees.
  • Small firms still hopeful despite dark clouds: OTTAWA – Small-business owners are maintaining a stiff upper lip despite a witch’s brew of high energy prices, currency concerns and a faltering U.S. economy, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business says in its latest quarterly survey of business optimism.
  • Sask. small business optimistic, survey says: OTTAWA — Small business owners in Saskatchewan are among the most positive about the future, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business says in its latest quarterly survey of national business optimism.
  • Small Investors control fate of ABCP market: The success of a plan to repair a $32- billion corner of Canada’s asset-backed commercial paper market rests largely with small investors who were sold the investments by brokerage Canaccord Capital Inc., analysts said Monday.
  • Trendy designer fixtures make LightSpan glow: Small Business — LightSpan Inc.

As always this list is not exhaustive, but I hope it will give you a little overview. — ST.
